Recover Deleted WhatsApp, Signal and Snapchat Messages

Whether you can get a deleted chat back depends almost entirely on which app it was in. WhatsApp has a backup path; Signal and Snapchat usually do not.

The short answer depends on the app

Unlike regular texts, messaging apps each make their own rules about what survives a deletion. WhatsApp can often be restored from a backup you control. Signal and Snapchat are built to keep almost nothing in the cloud, so a deleted message there is usually gone for good. This guide is about what youcan do with the backups and tools each app gives you — honestly, app by app.

WhatsApp: restore from a backup you made

WhatsApp does not store your chats on its servers, so recovery means restoring a backup you set up earlier — to Google Drive on Android or iCloud on iPhone, alongside a rolling on-device local backup. The mechanism is to uninstall, reinstall, and choose Restore during setup, and it only works if you sign in with the same phone number and the same Google or Apple account that made the backup. A restore brings the chat back to the state of that backup, so anything sent or deleted afterward will not match.

Worth knowing about the two delete options: “Delete for everyone” removes a message from other people's chats only for a limited time — about two days after sending — while “Delete for me”removes it just from your phone and leaves everyone else's copy intact.

Signal: generally not recoverable

Signal is the strict case. By design it keeps no server-side copy of your messages, so there is nothing to download from Signal itself. On Android you can restore from a local encrypted backup— but only if you turned it on in advance and kept the long backup passphrase it gave you. On iPhone there is no iCloud export, so removing the app without a Signal backup means the history is gone. And disappearing messages have no recovery path at all. If you did not set up a backup beforehand, the honest answer is that deleted Signal messages are generally not recoverable.

Snapchat: ephemeral by design

Snapchat is built to forget. Ordinary Snaps and chats are meant to vanish, and Snapchat states plainly that it cannot recover deleted Memories for you. What you can retrieve is limited to content that still exists: anything you saved to Memories, items locked in My Eyes Only(and only if you remember the passcode — forget it and that content is lost), and whatever a Download My Data export happens to include. There is no path to bring back a Snap that was already deleted.

The honest bottom line, by app

When a professional helps — and when nobody can

For deleted photos, see how to recover deleted photos on iPhone and Android; for ordinary text messages, see deleted texts on Android vs iPhone. For a phone you need preserved for a legal matter, our deleted-message recovery service explains the realistic limits.

The one thing to hold onto: a forensic professional cannot conjure data that does not exist. These tools only help when a backup or a local artifact still surviveson the device — an unsynced database, a cached file, or unallocated data that has not yet been overwritten. If you have a backup from before the deletion, that is your best path, and often one you can run yourself.
